Beyond PFAS: Mammut Responsibility Report Confirms Milestone
Seon, Switzerland – The Mammut Responsibility Report 2025 confirms a major milestone in the company’s PFAS phaseout: from the Fall-Winter 2025/2026 collection onwards, all new Mammut products, excluding ropes due to applicable regulatory exemptions, are made without intentionally added PFAS. In apparel, footwear, sleeping bags, harnesses, backpacks and accessories, this transition has been fully achieved. The report also highlights further progress across Mammut’s responsibility strategy, including the official validation of its long-term net-zero target by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), advances in responsible product development, repairability, and material innovation, as well as a 1.6 percent reduction in carbon intensity despite continued business growth.
SBTi validates Mammut’s long-term net-zero target
A key milestone in the reporting year was the official validation of Mammut’s long-term net-zero target by the Science Based Targets initiative. This means that both Mammut’s near-term 2030 targets and its long-term 2050 net-zero target are verified under the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard. With this validation, Mammut reinforces its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain and reaching net-zero by 2050.
In 2025, Mammut’s carbon footprint was an estimated 76,712 metric tons of CO₂-equivalent. This represents an approximate 13 percent increase compared to the recalculated 2024 figure and was largely attributable to growth in business activities. At the same time, Mammut reduced its carbon intensity by 1.6 percent, reflecting continued progress in product design, material choices, and supply chain management.
PFAS phaseout milestone reached for Fall-Winter 2025/2026
Another major focus of the 2025 Responsibility Report is Mammut’s progress in phasing out PFAS. For the Fall-Winter 2025/2026 collection, 100 percent of apparel, accessories, sleeping bags, harnesses, footwear, and backpacks and bags were made without intentionally added PFAS*. Due to their intended use, ropes fall under applicable regulatory exemptions and are therefore not included in the 2025 transition scope; 75 percent of ropes in the Fall-Winter 2025/2026 collection were nevertheless made without intentionally added PFAS. A PFAS-free rope treatment has been introduced and is planned to be applied across all rope styles by Spring-Summer 2027.
PFAS have historically been used in the outdoor industry to provide water, stain, and grease resistance. Due to their environmental persistence and potential risks to human health and wildlife, Mammut has been working on alternatives since 2016 and supports regulatory developments aimed at restricting PFAS use.
Heiko Schäfer, CEO of Mammut Sports Group AG: “Responsibility is becoming more complex and increasingly data-driven. While we have made meaningful progress, there is still substantial work ahead.”
Performance and responsibility by design
Responsibility is increasingly embedded in how Mammut designs and develops products. The new Eiger Extreme Nordwand 6.0 collection brings together high-alpine performance, durability, and repairability, with resilient constructions, repair-friendly details, GORE-TEX PRO ePE membranes, and materials without intentionally added PFAS while maintaining the performance requirements.
Progress is also visible in Mammut’s climbing equipment. The company developed a climbing rope made with 100 percent recycled polyamide using a mass balance approach, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 56 percent compared to conventional virgin polyamide, according to internal, non-third-party-verified calculations. The updated Ophir harness family now incorporates between 70 and 85 percent recycled materials by overall product weight and represents approximately 50 percent of Mammut’s total harness sales. This sets a new benchmark within the climbing industry for scaling recycled materials across a high-volume harness collection.
Repair and circularity as drivers of resource efficiency
Keeping products in use for longer remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the environmental footprint of outdoor equipment. In 2025, Mammut repaired an estimated 15,271 products globally, helping extend product lifetimes and reduce premature disposal.
Circularity and resource efficiency also continued to advance. Around 79,000 apparel pieces were created from leftover materials in 2025, an increase of approximately 49,000 pieces compared to 2024. Mammut also produced 6,707 WE CARE ropes from leftover rope nylon and repurposed 1,700 kilograms of industrial rope production offcuts through Mammut This sets a new benchmark within the climbing industry for scaling recycled materials across a high-volume harness collection. LOOPINSULATION. Based on material-level estimates, Mammut LOOPINSULATION can generate up to 48 percent less carbon emissions compared to standard virgin polyester insulation.
Advancing inclusion and transparency through long-term partnerships
Mammut’s Responsibility Report 2025 also underlines the company’s commitment to social responsibility. The continued partnership with ClimbAID reflects Mammut’s belief that mountain sports can create resilience, inclusion, and connection. In 2025, Mammut helped launch SAMA, a film co-created with ClimbAID that tells the story of two female refugee climbers in Lebanon.
Industry collaboration remains another important pillar of Mammut’s responsibility approach. In 2025, the company achieved LEADER membership status within Cascale, reflecting progress across Higg Index tools, science-based climate commitments, and supply chain transparency. Mammut also maintained long-standing partnerships, including 17 years as a Fair Wear Foundation member and 14 years as a bluesign System Partner.
